While reading an unrelated blog, I came across a blurb that "16 years of summer have been the longest summer on record" in "Game of Thrones" books. I realize from that discussion (without having read Martin's books) that the seasons in Westeros are variable length.

So I'd say about 2.5-3 years pass across the span of the first 5 books. Just over a year passes over the course of aGoT. (again determined by looking at the ages of children) Some of the

It's been a long wait for The Winds of Winter, with the latest book in the series, A Dance with Dragons, released back in 2011. Since then, Game of Thrones has not only started but also completed its eight-season run, while there's no clear sign of The Winds of Winter. Although the author had previously given hope of publishing in previous

In June 2018, it was announced that HBO had ordered a pilot for the first of many Game of Thrones spin-offs, It’s going to be a huge book, and I still have a long way to go.”
While A Song of Ice and Fire’s time jump wouldn’t have changed too much in the books’ progression, it would have created more issues with HBO’s Game of Thrones. Good point, I also noticed that in the early books, you alternate between long and short chapters. For example Arya's chapter at the Red Wedding is only 5 pages long while Tyrion's Purple Wedding chapter has 23 pages. In Feast and Dance, all chapters seem to be equally long, even those who have little to tell us.
Back when Game of Thrones premiered on HBO in 2011, defying both the odds and the network’s wariness, author George R.R. Martin was a few months away from releasing the fifth novel in his Song
